In2006,theU.S.EPAlaunchedthe2010/15PFOAStewardshipProgram.TheobjectiveofthisprogramistoencouragetheeliminationofPFOA(perfluorooctanoicacid)intheproductionofPTFEresin.PFOAisacompoundknowntopersistintheenvironment.Thetargetreductiongoalswere95%by2010,and100%by2015.Asaresultofthisandothercountries’actions,establishedPTFEsuppliersareceasingproductionofPTFEresinproducedusinghighlevelsofPFOAintheirpolymerizationprocess.

In2006,theU.S.EPAlaunchedthe2010/15PFOAStewardshipProgram.TheobjectiveofthisprogramistoencouragetheeliminationofPFOA(perfluorooctanoicacid)intheproductionofPTFEresin.PFOAisacompoundknowntopersistintheenvironment.Thetargetreductiongoalswere95%by2010,and100%by2015.Asaresultofthisandothercountries’actions,establishedPTFEsuppliersareceasingproductionofPTFEresinproducedusinghighlevelsofPFOAintheirpolymerizationprocess.
PTFEresinmanufacturersconvertedtheirhighvolumegradesbeforeconvertingthesmallervolumegradesusedinPTFEcoatedfiberglasslaminatesandfilledPTFElaminates.Runninginrelativelysmallvolume,thePTFEresinusedinthemanufactureofourRT/duroid®5880LZisthelastproductgradetobetransitionedtothenoPFOA(referredtointheRogers’productdescriptionas‘R3’)containingresinsystematRogers.AswasthecasewiththeR3transitionofourRT/duroid®5000and6000grades,wearemakingthechangetousethesamecoppergradetheycurrentlyuse.Thecopperusedonthe5880LZwillbediscontinuedbythemanufacturerin2015andinordertoassuresupplycontinuityandminimizetheneedforfuturerequalificationwewillqualifythatcopperchangeontheR3version.
TheintentofthisletteristoprovidenotificationtothependingchangeandfullcompliancewiththeEPA’srequest.Thechangeforthisproductgradewillcommenceduringthelastquarterof2014.Wehavebegunthefirstqualificationproductrunthismonthfromwhichwearegeneratingdatatobesharedwithcustomersandmakeavailablequalificationsamplesattheearliestopportunity.
Uponrequestwewillprovidethequalificationresultsanddatasettocurrentpurchasersassoonasitbecomesavailable.AllfirsttimeordersandnewpartconfigurationrequestswillusethenewrawmaterialR3versionimmediatelyuponqualification.TheremaininglegacysupplyisverylimitedandwewouldliketoworkwithallcurrentusersoftheRT/duroid®5880LZlegacyproducttotransitiontotheR3(NoPFOA)versionasquicklyaspossible.PleasecontactyourACMDCustomerServiceRepresentativeorSalesRepresentativetoreservethespecificqualificationsamplesyoumayrequire.
